The number 1 life complaint of most people….”I need more money.”, but for a large majority of the population that may not be true.
If there is a simple truth about most Americans and personal finances, we are financially illiterate. No one ever sat down with us in our primary, high school, or college years to give us a financial strategy or education such as applied money management. The typical immersion to personal capital has been, get a job, to buy something you WANT, which graduated to something you need.
We have forgotten the primary reason for the acquisition of money is to cover the primary needs with the “wants” being extra. If we view a history of money, we find it is a relatively recent thing. In the History of American most commerce was performed on the barter system, as there was not a reliable, standardized monetary system. The United States Dollar was authorized until, on August 8, 1785, the Continental Congress of the United States authorized the issuance of a new currency, the US dollar. Which puts the money system in America at a little over 230 years old at the time of this posting. Today the United States Dollar is the most recognized currency on the planet. With 230 of history behind it you would thing Americans would have a good gasp on how to manage The Dollar. NOPE.
Looking at what the government considers the poverty line may shock you, it is certainly lower than I expected. To find data related to financial dollar earning poverty levels visit the US CENSUS website.

Looking at the 2016 table, I was shocked at how low the poverty level base line figure listed by the US CENSUS bureau.
Now that I have give you some money information and a we bit of history, the overwhelming fact remains, American spend money on needless things. Literally throw money away, because we simple don’t understand a basic principle. Need vs. want. Yes typically we have our needs met from the Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs chart(love his chart), the rest falls under the land of comfort, poor money programming and an assault on your psychology to relieve you of your hard-earned “Chedda, dough, cash, grip, also referred to as MONEY.
Everything in your life is designed to relieve you of your monetary resources. The simplest passive recreations are bombarding your with subversive and overt means to keep you passing the money you ear from your account to theirs. TV, Radio and Internet are all there blasting with advertising in the hope to convince you of products a service you MUST have, because you NEED them.
At this very moment if I rid myself of several comforts items, I could save $500.00 or more a month easy, and have a negligible impact my life and lifestyle. One could pretty much go off grid in an urban setting and be very comfortable. I am not saying go live like a cave man, these are just talking points, directing you to look at where your money is going, to facilitate an understand of what is necessary and what is expendable relative to your personal finances.
The best example I can give is when applying for credit for major purchases. Banks will often tell you what YOU can afford, when you know very well the estimated credit given to you will stress your financial composure in the long run.
Sometimes you have to give to get. A person may have to give up some comfort now to live comfortable and far more secure later.
Exercise: Gather your budget plan and by every items place the following next to each expense.
- Absolutely Necessary (AN)
- Short Term Necessary (STN)
- A WANT (AW)
- Unnecessary (UN)
This will give you an indication of expendable expenses. Once you have items marked as STN, AW, or UN, add them together and see how much money you can save. and grow your OUTCOME.
So do you need more money or need to control the money you have?
